OMG a Democrat

Aside from attending the recent Democratic caucus, I’ve been talking and listening to the people of District 11. I’ve been knocking on doors, attending events and politely as possible inserting myself into people’s conversations.

For the most part, the people I’ve heard from have concerns that match up with mine. They include costs and affordability, healthcare, water quality and cancer rates, as well as education, workforce and accountability.  I’ve shared a good deal of friendly discussions and a few laughs with neighbors, old friends and strangers who are becoming new friends.

The other issue, that is often unspoken but still communicated, is that many people are scared. I

Lets Talk Bill Owen Iowa Issues

have met some who seem scared of me. I’ve met more who fear losing friends, business, respect and standing in their community by merely associating with me, a Democrat!  Really?  Here in Iowa, the state with values, morals, responsibility and a reputation for hard work and clean living, where we proclaim on our state flag that Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain, can I maintain my rights, my liberties, my freedom of choice?  I have asked this very question, in one way or another, of some people in District 11. A few have responded with something like “sure you can but” ….and the but is always something like “choices have consequences”.  So, by that logic, having made a choice to become a Democrat, there will be consequences?  I’m a grown up.  I know choices have consequences.  I tend to make good choices and good decisions for that very reason.  I’m sorry if you fear me because I’m now a Democrat. I’m sorry if you fear some of the issues we face because they make you uncomfortable.

Among the most difficult, fearsome and divisive topics we face sometimes gets brought up as “Gay Rights and Trans for Everybody”.  Yes, gay people and even people who don’t identify as male or female exist and some reside right here in our district. Don’t be afraid.  They are not converting people in our schools or elsewhere. Your fear is that it will be something you might have to learn about, discuss, and deal with and you are not prepared to do so.  These, mostly good, contributing members of our district pose a threat only in that you don’t understand them and this conundrum makes you uncomfortable.  Listen folks, I’m 67 and a straight male, I don’t pretend to understand the complexities of human sexuality, but I’m learning. You also know good people who have lost teenage kids to suicide because you and I couldn’t understand and wouldn’t try to be open and supportive.  This must change.

I’ve said it many times, I’ve been an Independent my entire life.  When I decided to run for office, I joined the Democrats. I’ve written about why and spoken to many of you about why.  All I can ask Is please don’t be afraid.  Let’s talk about how we get to a place where we can accept and communicate with one another. The biases we hold are shrinking our state and robbing its citizens of their liberties and rights. Help me turn this negative trend around.

Let’s talk.
